AirPods Pro is the standard for a good pair for true wireless earphones so I will reference that.
The main point of true wireless is convenience. What makes AirPods Pro great is the thinness of its case. The XM4 case looks insignificantly thicker than the AirPods case. However, it is just thick enough that it is not optimal to carry in jeans pockets so that is a fail in my book.
The build quality of the case and the earphones themselves are also subpar. They feel cheap and light. The case creaks and shifts when force is applied, something the AirPods case metal hinge never does.
There is also an issue with the transparency mode on my pair. The ANC would turn on by itself for half a second without any input. It happens randomly and repeatedly. It is annoying while having a conversation. Another thing that never happened on my AirPods Pro.
There is no denying that the AirPods Pro is a more comfortable fit. XM4 is much bigger. I can lie down on a pillow with AirPods Pro comfortably but not with the XM4.
Moving on to something more positive. Noise is the enemy to any good audio. The XM4 has the best noise isolation. The new foam ear tips creates a much better seal than the AirPods Pro. XM4's ANC is also significantly better than AirPods Pro. The good isolation allows for better immersion in music. I also prefer the XM4's audio quality. It is more dynamic, more detailed, with better instrument separation. Not to mention the app offers an equalizer for customization. AirPods Pro is relatively flatter, a bit more mid forward, and technically more accurate.
I think the AirPods Pro offers a more complete package. However, XM4 is still a very compelling choice for those who value audio quality more than the average person.
